Bulb usually tunicated, rarely naked (P. imperialis 1., P. persica 1.), often of 2 or many fleshy scales, sometimes of a single scale (P. persica 1.). Cauline foliage leaves often apparently opposite or verticillate, sometimes with cirrhose apex. Inflorescence a raceme or an umbel, often I-flowered. Flowers nodding, usually actinomorphic, rarely weakly zygomorhic (F. sect. Theresia). Perianth campanulate with erect segments in upper part, white, yellow, greenish, purple or reddish, with nectarial pits, grooves (furrows), (F. sewerzowii Regel), or pouches (l of them developed into a short spur) (P. sect. Theresia) at base. Filaments filiform or slightly flattened, sometimes papillose, rarely hairy [P. karelinii (Fisch.) Baker]. Anthers usually linear to ellipsoid, rarely subglobose (P. sect Theresia), usually pseudobasifixed, rarely dorsifixed versatile (P. fusca Turrill, P. sect. Liliorhiza spp.). Style trilobate to trifid. Capsule obovoid to globose, 6-angled, sometimes winged, erect after straightening of the pedicel. Seeds winged. Embryo minute.
