Bulb tunicate. Aerial stem scapiform or leafy, simple or branched, bulbiferous in axils of the lower leaves. Foliage leaves linear, the single basal leaf large; the cauline leaves few, reduced. Inflorescence 1-flowered or umbel-like, few-flowered. Flowers large, showy, usually campanulate, white, yellow, red, lavender or purple, usually variously tinged, erect or nodding. Tepals 6, outer 3 ovate to lanceolate, green or colored similarly to inner 3, inner 3 larger, broader, cuneate to clawed, hairy in lower part, with an often densely bearded, depressed gland or spot near base. Anthers pseudobasifixed, latrorse. Ovary 3-locular; ovules numerous; stigma sessile, 3-fid. Capsules orbicular to linear, 3-angled or 3-winged, septicidal, erect or nodding; seeds numerous, irregular or flattened.
