Bulb naked, of numerous imbricate fleshy scales. Rhizome sometimes connecting 2 bulbs (L. sect. Pseudolirion). Cauline foliage leaves often alternate, sometimes apparently verticillate. Bulbils sometimes present in the leafaxils. Flowers solitary or in a raceme. Perianth usually infundibular, rarely tubular or cupular, sometimes recurved. Tepals white, yellow, greenish, orange, pink, red, or purplish, nectariferous; nectaries usually narrowly grooved at tepal bases, sometimes fringed with papillae or hairs, rarely flat at outer tepals (L. bolanderi S. Wats., L. grayi S. Wats., L. canadense L., L. parvum Kellogg, L. maritimum Kellogg). Filaments filiform, sometimes hairy. Anthers linear to ellipsoid, dorsifixed versatile. Style apically with 3 stigmatic crests. Capsule narrowly ellipsoid to subglobose. Seeds winged. Embryo well developed.
